Starting out in your first legal position is a steep learning curve for anyone. The first few months are hectic and challenging, but I remember being struck by how approachable everyone at DLA Phillips Fox was and how much support I was offered from all directions.
When looking at all the different law firms I knew I wanted to work for a firm where I would feel 'at home'. DLA Phillips Fox stood out as the one offering the best working environment for me. I was impressed by the consistently warm and down-to-earth attitude of people and their practical approach to working life.
While the primary consideration is maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and service, DLA Phillips Fox shows how this can be achieved in a supportive, team environment. There are sports teams organised by the firm and activities put on throughout the year, such as trivia nights and inter-floor competitions. There is always something going on to get involved in.
I was also impressed by the relationship the firm has with DLA Piper and the implications this international relationship could have on the range of work available.
Through my work, I have been exposed to the fundamentals of corporate legal practice in New Zealand. I have also had the opportunity to work with very skilled professionals, and from them I am learning how to provide efficient and thorough legal services at an exceptional level.
The best thing about working for DLA Phillips Fox is that the work is challenging. I have been given every opportunity to develop my skills, broaden my knowledge and push the boundaries of what I think I can achieve. And while the work may be challenging, at DLA Phillips Fox I always feel safe in the knowledge that I have the support and supervision of a first class group of people.

I first worked for DLA Phillips Fox as a part-time paralegal before being offered the chance to do my articles at the firm. While working as a paralegal, I appreciated that everyone had time for me and was willing to help me learn. At the same time, they were willing to give me a decent amount of space for my own initiative. I enjoyed the range of work I was able to do, and when I was offered the chance to do my articles here, I was happy to accept.
The work that I've done has given me the kind of experience that only a large law firm can provide. Working on complex matters for large clients, you are required to produce high-quality work, and at the same time you're given good supervision and feedback when you need it. This has really helped to develop my technical legal skills.
At the same time, I've had the chance to work on my own pro bono files and to pursue an area of law that I'm really interested in, and hopefully the skills developed here will stand me in good stead for the future.
As a recent graduate, I haven't just been stuck working on the smallest part of a big file, but have been given the opportunity to do real work, including meeting with clients, drafting advices and heading to court.
DLA Phillips Fox recently announced its international secondments and placements policy ("Global Opportunities") and a few people have headed off to DLA Piper offices overseas. Like most staff, I'm looking forward to seeing how that works and think it's a real incentive to stay on.
Most importantly, I get along well with the people I work with.

DLA Phillip Fox's emerging position in the market was one of the firm's primary attractions for me. Having transferred from DLA Piper in London and understanding its position within the global market, I wanted to commit to an Australian firm that was also committed to strong growth in a global setting. DLA Phillips Fox provides that opportunity.
The 'hit the ground running' approach encouraged by the firm has meant there has been no delay in getting involved, in a meaningful way, with clients and their transactions, whether it be a merger, capital raising or large scale procurement.
I've really enjoyed being involved in transactions from inception to completion, whether it be the listing of a new company on the ASX, other capital raising, or a major government procurement. Being part of the team from the start helps give you a very real appreciation of what you have achieved when the deal is completed. This 'whole of process' involvement is strongly encouraged within the firm and something that I am really benefiting from.
Having exposure to a variety of clients, ranging from leading multinationals, to government departments, high net worth individuals and everyone in between, will ensure that wherever my career leads, I will be well placed to tackle the challenges faced. The variety of clients and the work they offer ensures that as I progress I can choose an area that suits me and is something that I want to do.
The best thing about working at DLA Phillips Fox is arguably the people. The people make the firm. They are serious about what they do, but don't forget that you can smile in between.

I joined DLA Phillips Fox as part of the Summer Clerk Program in 2005 which provided me with a solid mentoring and training foundation and then continued at the firm as a paralegal. Then, after a 6 month stint travelling the world, I started back as a graduate in May 2007. The last two years have been action packed, with my skills and experiences multiplying everyday.
As one of only a few juniors in my specialised group I am constantly challenged and exposed to great career opportunities. I know that I am actually making a difference - even in my first 6 months as a graduate at the firm. These opportunities really allow me to carve out my strengths as a lawyer. For example, I have been on secondment and gained invaluable insight into one of our client's business needs.
We often work with other solicitors in the international DLA network which gives me a global perspective. Being exposed to international matters and supported by a global network of lawyers is one of the best things about the work I do.
I was attracted by DLA Phillips Fox's culture, its people and the opportunity to gain experience with excellent lawyers on quality work. The culture of the firm is one where we like a good laugh, which makes coming to work enjoyable. It's great to be able to work with people who I respect and admire and who I consider to be friends as well as colleagues.
The culture also values excellence and integrity, which are also very important to being a good lawyer. I also really appreciate being acknowledged for my improvements and contribution.
